There is something about Lisbon, Portugal that breathes personality and spirit. From the moment I left the airport, the sense of warmth and a presence along side me that was quite indescribable. The charming thing about Portugal is that the people are open about the problems with their people, their government and their economy. Nonetheless, there is such an unconditional love that they have for “Lisa,” the nickname they give the city of Lisbon, that they always find themselves coming back.
When visiting Lisbon, I had the pleasure of staying with my roommate´s friend, Jose. At 29-years-old, he has lived in several places throughout the world, including the US, but his heart binds him to “Lisa.” He calls her “flawed, but still beautiful. After staying with him for 3 days, I can´t blame him.
Jose told me this story that I absolutely adored. It was about a local man who spent his entire life in Lisbon alongside his family. As years went by, all of his family died and he grew very lonely. To remain in the company of others, he decided to stand along side the road near the airport every day and wave goodbye to the passing cars. He became so popular in the city, people purposely starting driving by his path just to say hi. The locals started calling him “Mr. Goodbye,” but when he was interviewed by a local newspaper, he said he wished he would be called “Mr. Hello.” Even until his last day on earth, “Mr. Goodbye” stood near the highway waving both hellos and goodbyes to all of the passing cars. Just several hours after his death, the community gathered along side the road and waved to all of the passing cars. Jose said that hundreds of people gathered to commemorate the amiable smile of¨Mr. Goodbye.”
Can you imagine any other city that would welcome an old, lonely soul with such open arms? Unfortunately, I cannot.
Jose drove us all along side the ocean, and we rested our heads against the windows and enjoyed. Every few miles, we would stop to taste the amazing pastries, or to snap a photo of the setting sun and the crisp blue water.
Lisbon was truly a vacation. When I am able to add my pictures from my camera, I will be sure to do so.
XO,
